Rumbudzai's Cake!

Tongai & Rumbudzai’s son Tarisai turned 9 on Monday! If you remember, a few months back their son Tariro turned 4, and Rumbi wanted to bake him a birthday cake herself. The family had been separated for quite some time, reunited and living as gardeners and caretakers of our Children of Promise orphan project in Sefophe, and it was the first birthday they had been able to celebrate with him. Well now it is Tarisai’s birthday, and Rumbi wanted to bake him a cake too. Out in Sefophe they don’t have electricity and she does all of her cooking over an open fire. Kind of hard to bake a cake over an open fire! So Sunday after church the family came over and I helped Rumbi bake another cake.

This family has become so dear to our hearts! I can’t tell you what a joy it is to help them do something as simple as baking cakes for their children’s birthdays.  Something we take for granted, and something they are not able to do.  We had them over for a Sunday brunch and had such a wonderful time spending the afternoon baking and chatting while the boys were outside playing with Erik and Oaribile.

To come to church on Sunday mornings, they have to leave their home at five in the morning to try to catch a combi or hitch a ride for their 30 km journey into town. Public transportation is not reliable out that way, and to them a very expensive round-trip. But they rarely miss a Sunday – many times Tongai and Rumbudzai arrive separately because the ride they got first couldn’t take them all. They always arrive with big smiles on their faces grateful for the ride they got. They love the Lord, and the life they live clearly exhibits their walk with Him. I wish I could bring them all to America and introduce you to them, you would love them!
